Well, good afternoon, everybody.
Welcome to "Bebop to Hip-Hop: A Musical Journey".
We're so happy to be here making music for you all and we're gonna play lots of great styles of music and we want to show you how the music known as jazz continues to influence the music that we listen to today.
The first song you heard was an original composition called "Taildragger Blues," by our piano player and music director, Wally Minko.
Give a hand for Wally.
(audience clapping) Wally composed or arranged all of the music you're going to hear today.
And if you like writing down the musical ideas in your head, you might enjoy becoming a composer like Wally.
His music is played all over the world and yours could be too.
One of the most important and influential styles of music ever developed is the blues.
It was developed primarily by African Americans in the South.
The blues, it incorporates elements of spirituals, work songs, and call and response.
Often, blues music has lyrics which express the sorrow and difficulty of the singer.
Many people say that listening to the blues actually makes them feel better when they're feeling sad.
I guess it helps to know that other people have bad days too.
Well, this next song is another original composition by Wally, entitled "Nothing To See Here."
It's written in an energetic jazz style called bebop.
Bebop is known for being fast and this song is no exception.
The tempo is 260 beats per minute and that means we're playing more than one measure every second.
You'll hear solos from Aaron on the trumpet, Gary on the tenor saxophone.
And like we said before in jazz, when a soloist finishes playing their solo, which by the way is completely improvised, just making that up on the spot in their own mind.
When they're done with that, it's cool to clap for them.
Just don't clap too long.
Or we might miss the next cool solo that happens right afterwards.
Here is "Nothing To See Here."
(audience clapping) (drumsticks striking) - One, two, three.
(drumsticks continue clapping) (lively jazz music) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (lively jazz music continues) (dramatic jazz music) (audience cheering) - How about another hand for Aaron and Gary on those magnificent solos you just heard?
(audience cheering) (all clapping) Well, the next song belongs to a genre called funk.
Funk is a style of music that originated in the 1960s and is characterized by its strong syncopated rhythms which are often created by the use of bass and drums.
Funk maintains a lot of the energy of bebop but it shifts away from a swing feel into more of a steady rock beat.
In this song, you'll hear our guitarist, Steve, set up a syncopated rhythm along with the drums.
Well, soon the bass comes in and the funk style really comes alive.
Many people feel the urge to move and dance to funk music because it has just the right amount of groove and syncopation.
Here is an original chart by Wally called "Lucy Goosey."
(audience clapping) (drumsticks striking) (funk jazz music) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (rhythmic jazz music) (audience cheering) (rhythmic jazz music) (rhythmic jazz music continues) (funk jazz music) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (funk jazz music continues) (audience cheering) Well, as more and more people came to the United States, they brought their cultures with them.
Many people came from places with very different kinds of music and they started to infuse those styles into jazz music.
Music from Latin cultures especially became very popular.
Intricate rhythms and new kinds of percussion instruments were added and lots of very interesting music was made.
The next piece is another original tune from Wally Minko called "Funky Sango."
It combines elements of funk with a Cuban style called Sango.
Listen to how the sounds and the rhythms change from previous songs.
You'll also get to hear solos from Aaron on the trumpet, and Andy on the trombone.
Here is "Funky Sango."
(audience cheering) (drumsticks striking) (Latin funk jazz music) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (Latin funk jazz music continues) (audience cheering) Well, so far we've been focusing on the different instruments in jazz and other styles but there's another kind of instrument which is the foundation of so many wonderful songs.
It's the human voice.
Humans have been singing songs for generations, and it's still a uniquely personal way to express our emotions.
The next piece is a familiar tune called "Sway."
It's been recorded dozens of times by lots of wonderful artists and it mixes some Latin styles like Bolero and Mambo with a melody that is both relaxed but passionate.
Please give a warm welcome to Ms. Emily Baker to sing "Sway."

- You guys are awesome.
Well, moving ahead.
The pop music icon, Whitney Houston, got her start by singing in church choir.
It was there she developed a vocal style that was influenced by spirituals, soul music, gospel, and the blues.
And she found a way to weave in various elements of those styles into dozens of hit songs over several decades.
Popular music uses many of the same techniques found in jazz music, including a strong beat, syncopated rhythms, prominent baselines, and exciting horns.
And to give you an example of that, Emily's gonna continue singing with "I Want to Dance with Somebody."

It came out of the rhythm and blues genre and it featured a particular chord progression that influenced music for decades.
Wally, could you play an example of that harmonic progression?
(harmonic instrumental music) Well, the next song is a 21st century version of a doo-wop and it includes a catchy beat, fun lyrics and call and response.
Now, call and response is a big part of the blues and jazz and it was used in gospel music as well.
One player or singer calls out a phrase and then the audience or maybe another musician will respond.
It's a great way that music can reflect a conversation where each voice plays a part in what's being discussed.
Please join us by singing along on the end of each chorus and the next song.

(audience clapping) - Well, in the 1970s, the synthesizer became an important instrument in many styles of music, jazz fusion, rock and pop music used the synthesizer to create unique sounds that couldn't be made with traditional instruments.
As music progressed through the 1980s, the synth became even more popular.
Lately, pop music has seen the return of the sounds of the 1980s.
TV shows like "Stranger Things" and films like "Blade Runner 2049," they all used the synth as a major part of the musical score.
Artists like The Weekend and Harry Styles are using the sounds of the 1980s in fresh new ways.
Our next song also uses a synth lead, an infectious, melodic hook, and syncopation.
And that creates a retro vibe that still has a good danceable energy.
