Dan: gave Team Blue their first strike of the race.

And Team Red spent the night on the doorstep of a raging wildfire.
It's just really over the ridge.
It's just a matter of time.
Narrator (Male): DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... Come on!

Narrator: and to find their family.

♪ ♪ [intense music] Dan: Dawn breaks on Day 4 of "Relative Race" as four teams continue their search for new family.
On the Oregon coast, a long and worrisome night for Team Red, Troy and Nicole... [siren] Woman 1: "An evacuation notice has been issued for this area."
Troy: They've got to be on pins and needles because the whole house is made of wood.
Nicole: How do you walk away from this?
I don't know.
We're just hoping we can make it through the night here.
It's that simple.
Dan: finally comes to an end.
Nicole: We woke up this morning and you could just smell the smoke.
Last night was nerve-wracking with the wildfire so close to Ron's house.
But luckily we're still here this morning.
We received a notice from the police, but fortunately the fires missed the house.
♪ Dan: Team Blue wakes up in Peachtree City, Georgia, with their first strike in hand, and a wake-up call for the father and son team.
Michael: You've got to let it go.
Yesterday is yesterday.
We can't do anything about yesterday.
All we can do is focus on today, learn from mistakes we made, move forward.
I've been looking at the map a lot more this morning, so feeling better, move on, let it go.
Once we figure out where we're going, can you lead us?
Yep.
Absolutely.
Michael: Thank you.
Not a problem.
Michael: Well, we're going to get our relatives to lead us out and put us on the right path and, uh, head out that way.
Dan: Down south, in the Big Easy, sisters Jamie and Morgan also begin Day 4 with one strike and say goodbye to yet another musical connection.
We want to be able to meet every family member and go home with the $50,000 so we can help our mom.
Yeah, that's our main goal.
Okay, yeah.
I think we feel pretty good about that.
Yeah, awesome.
Dan: Still in southern Idaho, Team Black, John and Rebecca, also with one strike, wake up in their RV with family strategizing their routes for today.
Our relative, the night before, had said that he was off the next day and he would love to take us out of town.

[rock and roll music] [phone dings] Oh, here we go.
Uh-oh!
Oh boy.
Here we go.
"Good morning, teams, and welcome to Day 4 of 'Relative Race.'
"Team Red will be traveling to Eureka, California.
"Team Black will be travelling to Elko, Nevada.
"Cherokee, North Carolina.
"And Team Green will be travelling "to Thomasville, Alabama.
"Today's first-place winner will receive "five minutes of GPS or a Day 10 benefit.
"The rules can change at any time on 'Relative Race'"?
What?
[dramatic music] Rebecca: "From this point on, you will no longer be able to ask a relative to lead you out of the city."
"Your time starts now."
[groans in frustration] See you!
We've got to go.
Yep.
Michael: So we get the text from Dan this morning and it introduced a new rule change.
You've got to be kidding me.
We cannot ask our family members to help guide us out of where we're at.
Jamie: We'll see you later.
Love you guys!
Morgan: Even when our relatives have done that, we have already known the map, so that's fine.
Go Team Red!
[cheering] [intense music] Dan: It's Day 4 of "Relative Race."
All of our teams continue to race along different paths all across the country, each team looking for different relatives, each in a different location.
All of them have their eyes set on the finish line, this season in an undisclosed location.
At the start of the race four days ago in Washington D.C., all of our teams surrendered their smartphones and all use of technology in exchange for paper maps and flip phones-- No GPS or internet access.
Now they're headed to a new city.
They must take a selfie to prove that they made it, successfully complete a set of challenges, and discover their new relatives, each within a different allotted time.
The team that goes over their allotted time the most will receive a strike.
Three strikes and you're out of the race.
Welcome to Day 4 of "Relative Race."
♪ Rebecca: What do you think about last night's coin?
Now we have two.
I'm pretty happy because it's the same thing.
Two first-place victories and two coins in our hands.
We're thinking there's a target on our back.
So, who do you want to text?
Your cuz?
Can we do a text all?
No, I want to do individual.
We're going to single these people out.
So we started executing some of our plans to deceive the other teams about what we won for our prize for Day 10.
[phone dings] Morgan: The text said their Day 10 benefit wasn't good enough.
Why would they say that?
Dan: Fresh off their second victory in three days, Team Black seems to be racing with a strategy.
Today, John and Rebecca will make their way to Elko, Nevada.
With challenges factored in, their allotted time for the day is five hours and 36 minutes.
There's definitely some deception going on here.
We're not trusting anyone.
Dan: Team Green, Jamie and Morgan, make their way from New Orleans to Thomasville, Alabama.
Their allotted time for today is four hours and 30 minutes.
Jamie: Even if we make it to Day 10, Black Team already has two Day 10 benefits, and they're...
It's like essentially once we get there, nothing else matters.
♪ Michael: I hate Team Black's already won twice.
Yeah.
We haven't even won once.
Nah.
But it's so frustrating.
So we still don't know what this mysterious benefit is, but what we do know is that we need to get one, like today.
Dan: After receiving their first strike last night, Team Blue, Michael and Dylan, return to their home state today.
They will depart Peachtree City, Georgia, headed for Cherokee, North Carolina.
They have an allotted time of four hours and 53 minutes.
Nicole: We've got to get a Day 10 benefit.
Troy: We've got to get to Day 10.
We've got to get to Day 10.
Like, that has to happen.
When we get first place tonight, because we're-- We are-- We're ready for first place.
We are ready for first place.
When we get that tonight, we are definitely going for Day 10 benefit because Black has two, Green has one, and we can't get too far behind on those.
Dan: Team Red, Troy and Nicole, are leaving Oregon and travel south to Eureka, California.
They have the shortest allotted time of the day at three hours and 13 minutes.
[rock music ends] [whimsical music] Michael: We're not going the right way.
I don't think we are.
Dan's new rule really slipped us up this morning a bit.
We didn't know which way we were going.
Michael: Naw.
It was cloudy, so you couldn't judge where the sun was at to tell you if you were going east, west, north, or south.
I'm thinking we need to ask a human being and not be standing at the back of a UPS truck.
Okay.
So... Michael: Hey, stay!
Don't go.
UPS guy, go get him!
Flash your lights!
Go, go, go, go, go!
But then I spot a UPS guy.
All right, we've got to follow him.
Michael: Follow that guy!
Follow him.
UPS guy knows everything.
UPS guys know all the roads around here.
They're like a GPS maps.
Get in behind him, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
We followed him 'til he stopped, we got out.
The look on his face was priceless when we were running up to him, but we ask for directions.
He was so helpful.
Told us we're three stoplights away and which way to go.

[music ends] Dan: Crossing into Alabama, Team Green is feeling the southern vibe.
Yes!

Dylan: I got it.

♪ --going, I'm ready to meet my family on the road ♪ ♪ and I really got to pee, but I ain't going to do it.
♪ ♪ I'm going to hold-- ♪ Morgan: Thomasville city limits.
Oh, we're in the city limits.
♪ Can you get us both in it?

[camera shutter clicks] That's not going to work.

Eureka isn't the correct city."
[music swells dramatically] [upbeat music] Dan: Day 4 of "Relative Race" continues.
All teams have made it to their destination cities... [camera shutter clicks] and have submitted their city selfies.
"Welcome to Cherokee.
"Your first challenge is located at something-I-can't-pronounce Island."
"Your first challenge is located at City Park.
"Thomasville High School baseball field"?
All right, let's go.
We probably have to play baseball.
You played softball.
Don't let me down.
Okay, let's go.
[dramatic music] Dan: but not everyone passes inspection.
Eureka, not Ur-- They're missing an "E." Troy: "Photo rejected.
'U'reka isn't the correct city.
Is the "E"... Come on.
What are you talking about?
The "E" was-- He says he can't read the "E." Nicole: On our selfie, we cut out the "E," so the sign read "Ureka."
Troy: So we definitely lost some time taking our selfie again.
[camera shutter clicks] Okay, I'm going to send again.
[groans in frustration] There we go.
They got it.
Okay, okay.
What does he say?
"Welcome to Eureka!
"Your first challenge is located at 1003 Waterfront Drive."
Let's go.
Dan: Now with addresses in hand, it's an all-out sprint to the first of two challenges.
John: There's the City of Elko recreation.
That's probably where the park's at.
All right.
I think it should be down here because this is the high school.
Yeah.
Troy: Take a left right here, right here right by this bicycle sign.
John: Here's our challenge.
Yep.
Oh man.
Jamie: Um, okay.
I see balloons.
Okay, hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
Here we go.
Okay, stop.
Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
Okay, let's go.
[intense music] All right.
It says, "Pop it."
♪ Dan: The first challenge of the day is identical for each team.
Their task is to pop the team-colored balloons.
Inside each team-colored balloon are small tiles that contain a letter.
Once all five letters are retrieved, teams will need to unscramble the letters to unlock their next clue.
But if they pop one of the yellow balloons, they receive a penalty, a trick throw for the teammate.
Michael: Your allotted time for the day includes twenty minutes to complete this challenge.
Go, babe, go.
You go first.
Okay, go.
[blows whistle] Okay, I'm going to go for that one over there.
Okay.
[Rebecca groans] A little bit farther.
Little bit farther.
[pop] It's okay.
It's okay.
Dylan: So my dad hits a yellow one right off the bat.
I'm already-- I got a penalty against me now.
"Throw with your body facing backwards until the next balloon is popped."
Okay.
[pop] Aw, shoot!
[pop] [Rebecca groans] John: You got two.
Rebecca: So John ended up having to take the penalty of being blindfolded and throwing the dart backwards.
"Throw with your body facing backwards until the next balloon is popped."
Oh, wow.
I'm so sorry.
Team Green coming in at last place.
Morgan: The penalties are throw blindfolded, throw five feet backwards.
I'm like, ugh.
[pop] Oh no.
So another penalty, right?
That's a penalty.
You get it.
Uh-oh.
[pop] YES!
Good job, babe.
Troy: It took me, like, three or four resets and I finally got the red and the first Scrabble piece.
Nicole: Yep, and I got the second red.
YEAH!
Go get it, babe.

[pop] Yes!
Black balloon.
Rebecca: Once we hit that first balloon, it was like, we can actually do this.
[pop] Oh!
[cheers] Michael: Where are you-- Pick one and just go after one.
[pop] Yes!
Jamie: Get the letter!
Hurry, hurry, hurry.
[pop] Nicole: Yes, babe!
Michael: That's n-- Dude.
Dylan: I'm trying.
While I was throwing it backwards, I had a rough time.
It took a good bit to get used to, but once I finally nailed it... [pop] Yeah, a blue one!

Smooth sailing.
[pop] YES!
Go!
It's easier if I don't look.
John: Yes, got it!
Rebecca: Then the next two that I threw hit black balloons spot-on.
[pop] Both: YES!
Go!

[pop] Troy: Oh, man.
Then Troy got a penalty.
Yeah, on the middle ones.
Nicole: A double penalty.
Turn around and blindfolded.
Morgan: Ugh!
So close.
[pop] Yes!
John: We hit the fifth balloon, get the last letter, and Rebecca runs up and she takes control of the lock.
Skate.
S-k-a-t-e. [pop] YES!
GET IT!
GO!
Rebecca: There's no "K." John: Okay, so we know-- Okay, let's look at this.
Hold on.
So I jump over and I look at the lock and I look where the "K" is at, and I see that it's the second-to-last letter and that's the only one that has a "K." Try "takes."
"Task"?
"Take"?
"Takes"?
Is that a word?
Takes?
Uh...
While I was still throwing the darts, Morgan was trying to figure out what the word could be.
Morgan: S, a, k, and e!
Jamie: Stake.
Morgan: Stake?
Like they're all in stakes in the ground.
Dude, it was [indistinct]!
That was [indistinct] that got me through that.
It's a "T"!
Start with "stake."
We can already start.
Michael: It's not "takes."
Dylan: "Takes," okay.
Uh... Come on, Mr.
Escape Room.
John: Stake!

Morgan: You got it.

Rebecca: Oh, okay.

Nicole: At this point, I'm trying this sky hook that I've never done before.
Troy: There you go.
[pop] [both cheer] Go get it, baby!

All right, we know the last letter-- Dylan: "Skate"?
No, but "stake" in this way.
Is there an "E" at the end?
Michael: So we finally tried "stake" like you're staking down a tent.
Got it.
Dylan: Got it?
Michael: Got it.
Dylan: We got it.
Good job.
Yeah.
That worked.
"Your relative is a bounty hunter.
"Head across the park to find out what lies in store for you next."
Okay.
Let's do it.
Nicole: What's on the end?
Troy: "Stake" as in the stick.
S-t-a-k-e. Nicole: You got an "E"?
Troy: I got an "E".
Nicole: Okay.

Whoo!
"Your relative is an avid pool player.
Head to Roses Billiards."
All right, let's go.
Come on.

Dan: All teams now have moved on to challenge number two, which is unique to each team based on the interests and hobbies of the relatives that they're about to meet.
Did you get it?
Dan: For Michael and Dylan, it may be a bit of a hunt.
"Because your relative is a bounty hunter, "this challenge will involve a manhunt.
"Inside the lockbox are further instructions.
"However, it is on a timer that will only unlock "after five minutes.
"Michael, wait here until the lockbox opens.
"Dylan, hurry to the old town photo shop.
There you will learn more."
Dylan took the first card and ran into downtown Cherokee.
I had to wait an entire five minutes before my timer ran out to unlock my envelope with the instructions.
Well, this is going to be a long five minutes.
[sighs] "Your relative is an electrician.
"Wire a simple three-way house switch "by following a colored diagram "The bulb must light up with both switches.
"Your allotted time for the day includes twenty minutes to complete this challenge."
Rebecca: Okay.
We need to line this up so that we have all the wires correct, okay?
I've wired a single light switch before and so I felt pretty confident that we could do it.
Rebecca: I was intimidated.
John: But doing a two-switch...
It seemed a little confusing.
I need the white.
A green one from here to here?
And then green.
Same distance as these ones.
Nicole: And we came in.
We had three different challenges, and the first one was we had to rack it properly.
And then get one ball in.
Troy: Make sure the 1 is on the dot.
Make it nice and tight.
There we go, got one in!
Nicole: We got that one right off the bat.
Then we had to run to the next table to find out what our next game was.
"Three-ball: Your goal is to sink all three balls in six attempts."
Yes!
Okay.
Oh, get lucky.

Troy: Yes!
First try!
Whoo!
Jamie: "Your relative specializes in Alabama folklore."
Oh!
Jamie: The challenge was to find a book written by Kathryn Tucker Windham.
Jamie, look, look, look.
We have to transcribe the introduction of this book to a typewriter.
All right, read me everything.
Don't leave anything out.
I know I'm a Millennial, but I know how to use a typewriter.
Morgan: The thing is that I had to stay reading and Jamie had to continue typing.
Jamie: Except if we made one mistake, we had to start completely over.
Shoot, I put a capital "S." You did?
Okay.
We've got to start over.
Dan: Back on the bounty hunt... [clock ticking] Oh, of course it's here.
I found my next clue, which had a weird disguise and instructions to go on a scavenger hunt.
Oh, good.
Glasses.
I had no idea what my dad was doing.
[timer dings] All right, here we go.
Come on.
Uh... Oh, come on, man.
[laughs] "Alert: a fugitive is on the loose."
My instructions were to apprehend the wanted man before he completed his scavenger hunt.
I'm the bounty hunter.
"You must apprehend Dylan and retrieve the stolen recipe "before he gets to the fudge shop to avoid a five-minute team penalty."
So the better Dylan does, the worse we do as a team.
I've got to find him fast.
Dan: Challenge two is coming down to the wire.
Rebecca: We're missing a black in the middle.
John: No.
Yes.
Rebecca: Yes.
Okay, "Eight-ball: "Your goal is to sink all the balls, "with the eight-ball being the last.
"If you knock in the eight-ball too early, you must start all over."
Troy: Yes.
Yes!
I-n-t-o, one word?
Morgan: Mm-hmm.
You messed up?
All right.
Got to go from the beginning.
Troy: Right there.
Come on, right here.
Gah!
Darn it.
Come on!
Dan: Nearing the end of another day, the stress of "Relative Race" becomes very real as the clocks count down.
Morgan: You messed up?
We've got to go from the beginning.
"Eight-ball: "Your goal is to sink all the balls, with the 8-ball being the last."
I tried to nudge the 7 out of the way to get it away from the 8-ball that is at the pocket, and, um...
Troy: Right here.
Nicole: Seven stays, eight-ball goes in.
Darn it!
Come on!
So we have to totally rerack, start over.
Rerack.
Come on, babe, come on.
Let's go!
Let's go, let's go, let's go.
We had gotten so far.
When the 8-ball went in, I was totally deflated and like, "There goes today."
Dan: Meanwhile, Michael is in hot pursuit of a wanted man.
I don't see-- Oh, yeah!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'm just trying to run around town and find these clues.
I don't know why or what they are.
Michael: I'm so out of shape.
I'm huntin' for my son.
I see you!
Oh, come on.
Dylan!
Come here, boy!
Don't you run from your daddy.

Fort Tomahawk.
I got you.
Get your hands off me.
I'm looking.
This challenge was tiring to say the least.
I thought I was doing good.
I didn't realize the better I did, the harder it was for him to find me, but I-- I had to run so much more than he did.
So I had to apprehend you.
I see the resemblance.
Ha-ha-ha.
Looks just like you.
Uh-huh.
Michael: It was really fun to have to chase down my son.
"Congratulations, Michael."
Dan: With address in hand, Team Blue is off to find another relative.
[intense music] This, I think, is probably the hardest challenge we've had so far.
It took us quite a lot of time.
I mean, it wasn't mentally hard, but it was time-consuming, like you had to get all the pieces in the right place and you had to do it quickly.
You test the right switch, I'll test the left.
Ready?
John: Okay, right.
And the other one.
Switch must turn it on and off independently.
Try that one now.

Jamie: Typing the final paragraph, at first I started to get anxious and I started to get frustrated and I was like, "No, little girl.
"Be patient.
"Take deep breaths.
You're not going to complete this if you freak out."
That's it.
Okay, let's go.
All right.
We took the paper to Nicole, who's the director of the library.
She read through it.
I was so anxious because she was like literally reading through every little part.
All right, looks like it's correct.
Thank you so much.
We were correct and she gave us our next envelope.
"Your relative lives at 650 Tyson Street."
[dramatic music] Seventy-seven hours later...
I'm getting pretty frustrated at this point because I knocked the 8-ball in, so now we had to play another game.
I am by no means a pool player.
Thank goodness.
We finally knocked in the 8-ball, and I was just glad that one was over.
I was ready to move on at that point.
I was done.
All right, "Your relative lives on 1265 H Street."
We got it.
Let's go.
Dan: All teams have now completed challenge two and are off to find their new relatives.
Stop, stop.
Pull over and ask this dude.
Which dude?
Right here.
Okay.
When you come into an unfamiliar place, the best thing to do is find a local.
Excuse me, ma'am.
Woman 2: Yeah.
We're trying to find 559 Maple.
Do you know where that's at?
Rebecca: Our strategy is to check with some of the local people in the park right where our challenge is.
Second stop light, in town, take a right-- He knew exactly where it was at.
Okay.

Woman 2: Yeah, the tree streets are right here.
Okay, so we just need to go down this way?
Woman 2: Yep.
All the tree streets are right up in that direction.
Perfect.

Morgan: I'm definitely glad that we are in a small town today.
Okay, Tyson.
All right, turn right.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I'm pretty confident about finding our relative's house.
Troy: Eureka's a pretty small town.
It's set up on a grid system, so I knew exactly where to go on the map.
The only thing we had to worry about was all the stoplights we could hit on the way.
And a red light.
Perfect.
[laughs] Troy: Fantastic.
Michael: Are you at speed?
Dylan: Yeah, I'm going faster too.
What?
Faster than speed?
Yes.
Michael: No, don't go faster than the speed limit!
That's the last thing I want you to do.
Son, I tell you what.
We get an "X," you're going to find your own way home.
All right.
Rebecca: Maple?
John: Yep.
This is Maple?
This is 757.
Six-fifty, six-fifty.
We got 697.
All right, it's not that far.
It's going to be on the right-hand side.
There's G Street right there.
Perfect.

About 15 years I've been doing genealogy.
What I like about genealogy is the detective work of taking clues and getting, you know, a final result out of it and figuring out the pieces of a puzzle.
I think that's really, really important.

Three days ago, my Aunt Kathy showed me a picture of her brother, Ken.

Rebecca: Wow.
So today, I immediately recognized them when I saw them.

I know that my Uncle Kenny and my mom were really close and that he tried to adopt my sister and I when my dad went to prison, so it was really awesome to finally get to meet him and ask him some really important questions.

[mandolin music resumes] Michael: Meeting my cousin Jeff, I'd never have imagined he was a bounty hunter.
More like an insurance salesman or something.
Dan: As fugitives and fudge create a unique family dynamic for Team Blue, Jamie and Morgan are about to go on the air.
Morgan: Our cousin Deborah is a radio host.
She took us to her radio station and we were interviewed by her.
We have some special guests here this evening, which I am so honored to have two of my cousins, Jamie and Morgan.

Hi.
I'm Deborah Rankins.
The Rankins Files Radio Talk Show is a radio show about the people, places, and events of southwest Alabama.
My goal is to capture the people and their stories through their voices.
Tell me a little bit of something about you, who you are.
Morgan is like the storyteller, oddly enough.
People always kind of dub her as that because she has a song called "Storyteller."
And that is exactly my passion for telling stories.
It's about getting someone's story out there and touching someone's life.
So are you going to share your song with us today?
Yes, yes.
Deborah: I was really moved when Morgan offered to share a story with me, but actually, it's a song about storytelling.
This is my cousin.
[guitar music] ♪ On a Sunday evening, I'm looking back.

♪ ♪ Over all the years and where I've been.
♪ Deborah: That's my cousin, who is actually-- She has a universal message of encouragement.
♪ It is well.
♪ ♪ Ooh, the mountain where I climbed-- ♪ It really touched my heart.
♪ For years and years and years I'll tell.
♪ ♪ That's the story I'll tell.
♪ [gentle music] Aunt Kathy told us that you were the one that found my mom... Mm-hmm, yes.
When she had her accident?
Yep.
Can you tell me what happened?
Yeah.
Rebecca: Since my dad murdered my stepmother, Susan, I've always questioned whether or not he was involved in my mother, Karen's death.
So tonight I found out from my Uncle Kenny that he was the last person to speak with her before she passed.
Aunt Kathy said that she talked to you after it happened Yep, oh, yep...
It's okay if you don't want to tell me.
No, that's okay.
Rebecca had asked me about how her mom had died, and I was able to tell her the actual facts and the truth as to really what happened.
We rented a warehouse and we built an office inside of it.
She was in the office by herself and her heel got caught in the stair-- In the top of the stair and she-- She came all the way down to the floor and landed on her head.
She said that she loved me and that was the last thing she ever said.
I saw in Rebecca's eyes when she found out that her mom died of truly an accident, it was a great relief.
Rebecca: This is all I need to know about her.
Her last words were to tell somebody that she loved them.
That was what was in her heart and that's what she died with.
That's a good feeling.
It's a good feeling.
♪ [piano music] Holy smokes.

Troy: Jacob sits down at the table with us and he pulls out this huge family tree.
I'm right here.
That's me.
Okay.
My last name, McMichael.
We come up here to this one.
Who's that?
John William Hartley?
Yep.
And if you just follow this one down over this line, you might be able to find your name.
That's my mom-- That's me!
[laughs] There's my mom.
That's me!
Holy cow.
The biggest reason why I wanted to be on the show is to find out who my biological father is.
I grew up as an only child and sometime between the age of zero and five, my mom and dad split up and I haven't seen my dad since.
That's my dad.
[dramatic music] That's my dad.
♪ We're related on your dad's side.
That's pretty cool.
That's-- That's-- [clears throat] That's the first time I've seen his name on a piece of paper.
[clears throat] That's pretty cool.
That's my dad.
That's his name.
That's Robert James Harmon.
That's the first time I'd seen his name on a family tree.
So, his birthday.
Um, December 11th.
Is that his birthday?
What is that?
Marriage date.
I started looking at the tree a little bit more, and it has, you know, it has a "b" for birth, it has an "m" for married.
Birth, '47.
Marriage, '71.
[Troy sniffs] Does that mean he's deceased?
Jacob: That means he's deceased.
[dramatic music] It has a "d" for deceased.
I had to give Troy some bad news.
It was really difficult.
No one likes to have that effect on someone.
Nicole: My heart just hurts for him because I just... We were hoping to find him.
[sniffs] That was one of my biggest fears.
That's why I stopped looking.
Jacob: I feel like that was an important part of what he was looking for, and that's the closure on that chapter in his life.
[somber music] [upbeat music] Michael: We found out Jeff-- Not only is he a bail bondsman, bounty hunter, but he owns three fudge shops.
So what we're going to do today is dip some of your favorite snacks.
[laughs] In, uh, the chocolate.
We took Michael and Dylan to our fudge shop and we tried some really unique snacks.
So we've got some fine milk chocolate all melted and ready to go here.
Michael: Oh, it looks fine.
We're dipping... Dylan: Strawberries.
Michael: Twinkies.
Dylan: Oreos.
Beef jerky.
And Cool Ranch Doritos.
Michael: It's not bad!
It really is not bad.
Jeff: It's not all that bad.
Doritos.
Woman 3: I kinda like that one.
You can definitely taste the cool ranch.
I want to work here.
[Jeff laughs] Dylan: That ain't bad.
That's not bad.
How is this possible?
Chocolate makes everything better.
Wonderful.
Yeah, that was very surprising to me.
We need to just pack all this up and send it with you.
Uh, yes we do.
[laughs] Beef jerky, man.
Seriously?
That works.
[laughter] [thoughtful music] Rebecca: So I've had struggles of my own in my life.
I've had difficulties to overcome and I've had a big hurdle to get past with losing my mom, but I'm not the only person who's struggled since my mom passed away.
My Uncle Kenny has fought his own battles.
It's been hard for him to deal with the loss of his sister, who was like a best friend.
All our lives, Karen and I, we are very strong together.
We hung together, we looked out for each other.
She's my best friend.
We always hung out.
We, uh, ran through the neighborhood together.
She was a very good person.
Rebecca: For me to have true and honest and actual memories in a conversation about my mom, Karen Richards, is refreshing.
And it's deep and it's real.
We did-- We camped and hiked and fishing and-- She was outdoors.
Those are my favorite things.
Kenny: Yeah.
♪ Rebecca: I'm learning about my mom, Karen Richards, that we were more alike than I ever could have imagined.
You look just like her.
Your eyes.
[laughs] Definitely.
And your hair.
She had a lot of friends and you're named after two of her best friends.
Rebecca: Really?
Kenny: Rebecca Lynn, yep.
When I first saw Rebecca today, she looks like her mom in a lot of ways: her eyes and her eyebrows and the way she carries herself and her attitude is a lot like her mom's.
That's me.
Rebecca: That's you?
Kenny: Yeah.
[laughs] Rebecca: Whoa.
Before this, it was almost like she was a mythical creature.
And now... Now she's more than that.
She's alive.
She's not gone anymore.
[soft music] I remember the last time that I saw him.
I was, uh, I was probably-- Like, maybe three or four.
I had an image of my dad in my head bending over, um, and playing with me.
I've carried it for years, obviously, 44 years I've carried this image.
Jacob: Well, I want you to take a look at these.
Oh boy.
Got some photos for you.
[sighs] Gave me some pictures.
These were-- [clears throat] These were pictures of me and my dad and my dad and my mom.
[sniffs] That's tough to see.
Remember the picture I told you, of bending over?
[dramatic music] Oh, see?
And these are, uh, little snapshots that I recall in my mind.
I remember him having facial hair.
Of course, he has lamb chops.
Those are-- I remember this lake.
This lake right here is Lake Belton.
We used to fish on Lake Belton all the time.
We used to watch the speedboat races.
This is good.
[chuckles] That's awesome, man.

Jacob: It was a really cool experience doing that for Troy, letting him see photos of his father for the first time.
But I'm really glad to have that moment with him.
I've got to give you a hug.

It seems impossible, if I were to tell people what I've done in four days.
It would seem impossible if I told people how much of my family that I've connected with in four days and how I wasn't able to do that in 44 years.
And I'm not even halfway through.
I don't know that emotionally... [laughs] He's a wreck.
I'm a wreck right now.
I, uh, I know Nicole's like, "Come on, hold it together," and I'm like, "This is 44 years... of just not knowing."
And you don't know how you're going to handle it.
You just don't know.
You can say, "I'm going to be tough.
I'm going to be strong."
No one knows how to handle this type of news.
So, the past four days...
I've gained so much from these past four days.
[music swells] [sentimental music] [sentimental music] Dan: Day 4 of "Relative Race" simmers down to the final moments as each team awaits the final results.
John: I think today we did a decent job.
Our challenges went pretty well.
[pop] Yes!
John: Some of those penalties that we got made it a little-- A little more difficult, but I think we were able to overcome those pretty quickly.
Dylan: I am not nearly as nervous as I was yesterday.
Both: Yeah!
[cheering] Michael: We killed both challenges.
We rocked 'em.
Morgan: We did not do terrible today, but we did ride it pretty close.
[pop] Morgan: Oh no.
So another penalty.
That's a penalty.
You get it.
Nicole: I'm certain of my strong points and definitely certain, even more so, of my weaknesses and what cost us today... [shouts] Darn it.
was that 8-ball going in.
Dan: Well, it's Day 4 of "Relative Race" and your family trees are rapidly filling up.
I think that's fair to say.
Would everybody agree?
All: Yes.
Dan: Team Green, really cool discovery for you guys tonight because you meet your cousin and she is a national renown radio host and she interviews you on her radio show.
It's so crazy because radio is a huge part of what we do, so to just be in a place with a relative we just met and she ended up being familiar with our music.
Jamie: Yeah, it was a really cool moment.
It was just what we needed today.
It was everything we needed.
It was great.
Dan: Let's go ahead and turn our attention to Team Blue.
Another really interesting discovery: you meet a cousin who not only is a bounty hunter, but owns fudge shops?
Three of 'em.
Dan: I don't know about you guys, but I love fudge.
So I guess they hunt people down and give them fudge as they're arresting them.
[laughter] Dan: Well, I'll tell you what.
I want to be invited to your next family reunion because that sounds like a party.
Turning to a little more serious matter, Team Black, your family tree continues to blossom in front of your eyes and with it, tonight, I think you may have received some healing, some closure, better understanding.
Is that fair to say?
I think that's very fair to say.
I think a lot of, uh, misunderstandings and, um, things that needed clarification tonight and healing took place for not only us, or for myself, but for my relative as well, for my uncle.
I think that it was a beautiful beginning to a new relationship.
Dan: Well, speaking of the importance of family, Troy and Nicole... Can you share with us what you discovered tonight?
[Troy sighs] Not only did I meet an awesome cousin and his wife, um, but, uh... A very avid genealogist himself who took it upon himself to make a lovely chart and, uh, help me with my... [sobs] Help me with my family tree.
And, uh, I came across somebody in my family tree that I've been looking for ever since the start of the show, and, uh, as I go down the tree, my finger comes across my dad's name.
Who you've been searching for.
Troy: Yes.
But there was one piece of information... that I discovered.
And he, um... [sighs] He passed away in 2002.
Michael: While he was telling his revelation for the day and what happened, it was going through my mind the whole time: I met my father.
It wasn't too late for me.
And I-- My heart just went out to him.
[sentimental music] Dan: Troy, Nicole, I know that you've been searching for your father and searching for an answer, and this must be tough, certainly, but I hope that for you also, there is at least a sense of knowing and a sense of closure.
It's bittersweet to know that he is, uh, passed away.
So that is definitely the closure I was looking for.
I just... didn't know how I was going to handle that answer.
Rebecca: It breaks my heart for Troy because he was hoping to meet his dad, and he doesn't get to do that.
He gets to find peace, but I'm sure in his heart, the one thing that he was hoping for, he didn't find.
I got what I was hoping for.
He doesn't get that.
Dan: And nothing touches me like following the discovery of your families.
And so I thank you for sharing such deep, private, personal family matters with everyone that is involved with "Relative Race," for everybody that cheers you on, that roots for you from one stop to the next.
I want to thank you for sharing these very personal, private things with us.
[music intensifies] Unfortunately, on a day like today, like no other that we've had on this show before, we still have to hand out a strike.
And so the results are official.
Finishing in first place, it is amazing what you can do blindfolded, because Team Black finishes six minutes under their allotted time.
You cruised through both of your challenges and had no problem finding your relative.
Another first place.
This is unreal.
Wow.
[laughs] I don't have words for it.
I mean, we're giving it our all because I don't want to go home until I see everybody.
Yeah.
Dan: Now the question is, what are you going to choose?
Five minutes of GPS time tomorrow or a Day 10 benefit?
Well, we've been sticking with these Day 10 benefits, but I think that police escort could have really helped us today so we're going to take the GPS for tomorrow.
Dan: Five minutes of GPS for you tomorrow.
Wow, that may change things for everyone.
So Team Black got first place again.
Apparently that's all they know how to do.
Yeah, and now they have five minutes of GPS time and we do not stand a chance.
Nope.
[intense music] Finishing in second place, certainly safe for another day, Michael and Dylan.
You were nine minutes over your allotted time.
I'm happy with the results.
It-- As close and as tight as it is, it just shows you one little snafu, one little misstep, we could have really gotten close to getting first today if we hadn't missed one little turn to find our relative.
It's a good thing you guys really know about bounty hunting, because that helped you in your second challenge.
Yes, it did.
And so now it's between Team Green and Team Red.
It's been a day that has been full of revelation, but unfortunately, Team Red, it's also a day of your first strike.
Team Green, you finished eleven minutes over your allotted time.
Team Red, you finished 15 minutes over your allotted time.
This is an interesting scenario for all of you.
Incredibly, each one of you now has one strike.
And so, "Relative Race" continues tomorrow.
But for now, I want you to get some good rest.
Think about those family connections.
Think about what you can do better tomorrow.

♪ Dan: The results for Day 4 are in: finishing in first place for the second day in a row, Team Black, once again under their allotted time by six minutes.
John: My cousin, Troy had a very emotional experience today and it still chokes me up even right now because he is family.
Dan: Redeeming themselves from last place the night before, Team Blue came in second at nine minutes over their allotted time.
Team Black is a machine.
Today we got second.
I'm happy.
And today we worked well.
Dan: Finishing in third and avoiding a second strike is Team Green, eleven minutes over their allotted time.
Morgan: Now that everybody has one strike, the playing field is finally leveled again.
Yeah, we'll definitely be ready for tomorrow.
Dan: And after a heartbreaking discovery, Team Red came in last, fifteen minutes over their allotted time and picking up their first strike on "Relative Race."
Nicole: We have one strike now, but... You know, there are people out there that we still have to meet.
We have to.
We have to finish this.
We have to get to Day 10.
There's so much going on, but at the end of this, it just reminds us that "Relative Race"-- Yes, it's a competition.
Yes, it's a show.
Yes, it's an incredible opportunity, but at the end of the day-- At the beginning of the day, it's about finding your family.
We got our first strike.
Cuz says we're first place the whole time.
Yeah, he says we're first place from here on out.
That's his prediction.
I like it.
I like it too.
So, I know you got the strike today, but we're rooting for you guys, really.
