Here's Pat Canty.
[applause] [music] >>Pat>> Oh.
Hello.
Hello, hello.
Thanks, Bill.
Thanks.
Hello, everybody, and welcome to our sixth annual Mainstreet Unplugged Yuletide.
Tonight's show is filled with the holiday spirit that will surely get you ready for the festive season.
What comes with the festive season?
Travel.
Lots of travel.
Hey, Bill.
>>Yes?
>>Why did Santa get a parking ticket?
>>I don't know, Pat.
Why?
>>Because he was parked in a snow parking.
Hey, ho!
[ba-da-bump-tss] >> Okay, Bill, what is one of your favorite traditions?
When you were a kid.
What?
>>Well, you know, decorating the Christmas tree, and then we would like to stand around the fire and have hot cocoa, but we didn't have a fireplace, so my dad just stock the stack of logs in the living room and put it.
It was a fire hazard, folks.
I'll just say that.
>>Mine was eating.
>>Oh ho!
>>So anyway.
Yeah, my, my, my favorite memory was all the foods that we would make and also opening presents.
We would as kids, we would get up and, like, start getting up at like four in the morning and waking our parents up.
Says it was a time to go down yet.
Right.
No, no, no.
And so you do that every 30 minutes until they finally said about 6 a.m.. Yeah, you can go down.
And we'd run down and open at the presents.
And it was a lot of fun.
>>That sounds great.
>>So here's one more question I have for you, Bill.
What is it called when a snowman has a temper tantrum?
>>Oh, Pat, I don't know, wh what?
>>A meltdown.
>>Oh, hey, yo.
[ba-da-bump-tss] >>All right, all right, enough fun and frivolity.
>>Yes, enough of that.
>>Let's get started on tonights show.
First up, we have little Miss Jose.
Jovi Phillips singing her rendition of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
[applause] >>Oh, take it away Jovi.

Come on.
Come on over and spend a few minutes with us.
Were going to visit with you some.
Uh That was wonderful wonderful, wonderful.
So tell me, what do you all plan to do?
What does your family plan to do for Christmas?
>>Uh well, I plan to wake up.
I plan to jump on my mom until they get up and then go downstairs, open presents, then go to the Fundome and have some food.
>>Cant beat that >> So,.
so do you have any ideas up your sleeve on what you'd like to ask Santa for?
For Christmas?
>>Yeah.
I would like to ask him for a new iPad because mine is pretty old.
>>Okay, When you say old, how old?
I mean, he's like that younger generation with all these upgrades.
It's like three months old.
So how old is old in this case?
>>Uh, like six and a half.
>>Okay.
You get six and a half years.
That's good.
Okay.
You've it's thoroughly worn out.
So I think Santa, between you being extra specially good this year and that six year old iPad, I think you're going to probably get what you want.
So that's good.
>>Jovi, I have a question for you.
What did one snowman say to the other?
Snowman?
>>I don't know what?
>>Well, he said, do you smell carrots?
[laughter] [ba-da-ump-tss] >>Thanks, Jovi, for laughing at that one.
>>So so before before before we started the show, you and I were visiting and.
And you're just having a good old time.
You're not even nervous or anything.
You're just having the time of your life.
When did you start singing?
Because you're often young and your voice is awfully good.
So tell us a little bit about what got you started in singing when you when you started.
>>I think it all started when I was three years old and I had this plastic microphone.
I was singing Winnie the Pooh.
>>Really?
>>Yes.
>>Have you taken any voice lessons?
>>Yes, I started whenever I was six or five.
>>Wow.
And so what grade are now?
>>Fourth >>That's pretty good.
That's pretty good.
Well, I think you have a good future.
A good future.
So.
So told us what you plan to do for Christmas.
What's your what's your favorite tradition at Christmas?
What's your favorite thing to do?
>>I think spending all the time with my family.
>>That's that's the most fun.
Well, that's wonderful.
Well, listen, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.
And thank you so much for helping us bring a lot of merriment to a lot of people.
So I wish you a merry Christmas.
And thank you so much.

So what I'd like to do right now is welcome uh, Mr. Pervis.
Evan's a good friend of ours.
And and and Pervis, you're going to come back in a little while and sing that beautiful voice of yours.
But.
But let's visit for a minute, uh.
You know, Christmas is all about traditions.
Tell us some of your family traditions at Christmas that you remember.
>>Pervis>>Oh, well, especially here in Midland, there's so much to do.
So Christmas festivities start early for us If it's going to catch a production of the Midland Community Theater or The Nutcracker by the Midland Festival Ballet or a church production or pageant, we're all in for that and of course, it culminates with our extended family invited to come in and and share in gifts and lots of food and dressings and greens and yams and hams and all of those.
>>That's what I like you.
Yeah.
>>Ham and yam set an extra place for me.
>>So you got it.
>>So everyone's going to get to hear you sing later.
And you have, like I said earlier, you have a beautiful voice.
How long have you been singing?
What got you involved in singing?
Because it's not your day job, but you're certainly singing like it should be.
>>Oh, you're too kin.
Its just the family vibes.
We're a musical family, so I've been singing since I was very small, as young as I can remember in church mainly.
>> Okay.
Yeah.
And so you're how many how many do you expect to have a family celebrating this Christmas?
>>There's no telling because we have when I say extended family, that's friends.
Everybody in the audience you invited to.
>>Ham and yams everybody, ham and yams.
[laughter] >>Well, so so it does It does It's more of a season for you, right?
It's not just today.
>>Absolutely.
It's the giving season for sure.
>>Well, that's fantastic.
Well, we're looking forward to having you come back and sing for us.
And it's really, really going to be special.
Um, Bill?
>>Yeah Well, yeah, first.
Well, you know, I just love the sounds of Christmas.
You were talking about the sounds of Christmas.
I love them.
>>Yeah, you know, a name, a more Christmasy sound than sleigh bells.
>>Bert>> Footsteps on the roof.
>>Yeah.
>>A fire crackling in the middle of your living room.
>>Choir singing.
>>Yeah, my granddad snoring.
>>Okay, well, after Christmas dinner, maybe.

>>Yeah, it brings me back to my childhood.

>>Oh, thank you, drummer.

[laughter] >>Well, on to our next performance.
Playing Silver Bells and Frosty the Snowman on the steel drum.
Here's Mr. Kevin.
Broome.
[applause] [music] [applause] [music] [applause] >>Come on over can.
This visit a little bit.
So so I think it's safe to say you don't see many of those instruments playing alongside a fiddle and then a West Texas Country Western band.
That's a pretty unique instrument.
Tell us about it.
>>Kevin>>Well, the steel drummer steel pan is an instrument native to Trinidad and Tobago.
It's an island nation just northeast of South America.
And the art form made its way to America really about 70 or 80 years ago.
So it's not that not that old of an instrument for us.
>>So what got you interested in learning how to play that?
How long ago did you start?
And like I said, what got you interested in it?
>>Well, I picked this up in college in, of all places, Abilene, Texas, went to ACU we had a steel drum band there, a full complement of steel drums, and moved back to Midland, who grew up here and moved back to Midland and thought, you know, I haven't seen many of those around, like you said, so I thought I'd bring one over here to the desert.
>>Hey, you know, I have a question.
It may be more of a medical question, though, but when I hit my head, it makes that same sound, [laughter] I think I need to see a doctor.
>>You may want to see two or three.
>>Okay.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Make sure I'm in tune.
at least.
>>So when you were in Abilene, were you were you in a music major in the band?
Were you percussionist?
>>Yes.
What drew you there?
You all had a band.
>>I was a music major, a percussionist and a band director.
Now I have a whole set of steel drums at the school where I teach and we have a great time playing.
>>Where do you teach?
>>At Midland Christian School?
>>So, so.
So where does one by one of those?
Because I guess you don't go down to Ntune music and pull that off the shelf.
>>Well, they can get one for you if you'd like one.
I always encourage people not to buy an instrument where you can buy a gallon of milk.
But there is a of all places in Ohio is a company from Ohio's where I bought this drum from this drum itself is actually from Trinidad.
>>Oh, really?
>>Yes.
>>Did you did you go down there and get it yourself or did you buy through Ohio?
>>I wish I don't have that stamp in my passport yet, But the company in Ohio actually purchased this from Trinidad.
>>That's amazing.
That's amazing.
And so how many do you have?
You just have that one, right?
>>Personally, I have the one at the school.
We have a set of bass pans, a set of cello pans, some double seconds and some lead pans.
It fills out the entire range of the instruments.
>>So that's quite a tropical symphonic sound and.
>>It's a lot of.
Fun.
>>So so how do you there?
No keys, so to speak.
You know, black keys, white keys.
How do you how do you navigate your way around that thing?
As far as.
>>Well as as a musician, I understand the layout is laid out and what we call the circle office.
There's a logical layout to it.
But to be honest with you, I have the note names written on the notes.
>>But you can't beat that well, I can't.
Thank you enough.
It's been a wonderful performance and it's a great instrument.
It really helps.
>>You know, I like the steel drum.
It's it's got a fun sound to it, but it still drums.
[laughter] Drummer.
Come on.
It was a drum joke.
[ba-da-bump-tss] Yeah.
Come on, now.
Okay, I'm taking the $5 back on that.
Okay.
>>Oh, that is really.

I also love to sing at the Midland Downtown Farmers Market and then anywhere anybody else will have me sing.
I love to sing.
I'm so grateful to be here.
I love singing Christmas songs.

So it's follows the two men who are a Broadway duo and they meet sisters and we're trying to trying to get us to be part of their musical revue.
And there's love interests and there's music and lots of dancing.
It's been it's been a lot of fun to do the show.
so >>And I don't I don't want to spoil anything for for anyone who hasn't seen it already.
But but what's your favorite part of the play, either of.
You >>Well, I love the finale, and I won't say exactly why, because you'll have to come see it.
Um, but I love the finale because it's such a great way to wrap up this story.
And it feels like a big Christmas present and it has a lot of heart and Christmas spirit.
>>That's great.
What about you?
>>My favorite is the scene with Count Your Blessings.
It's always been one of a favorite song of mine and I get to actually sing this song it and this in this show, and I'm excited about that.
In fact, Cody's going to go.
Cody sings it with me on stage.
>>Oh, really?
>>In a little while, yeah.
>>So obviously this is not your day job.
I always marvel at community theater because there's so many talented people that that sacrificed so much to do a lot with community, to provide entertainment for our community.
Tell us each what do you do when you're not working on on White Christmas?
>>Well, I'm very lucky.
I actually do get to work at the Midland Community Theater.
I'm the assistant director of education, um so it's really great to be able to work with my students um in my rehearsals as well as in these rehearsals.
And it really is such a great community.
So it's exciting.
>>I'm a I'm a stay at home mom.
Actually.
I have two kids at two different schools, so I volunteer at their schools.
I also substitute at their school so their after school activities and just being there to help them is a pretty it's a full time job.
>>Well, how did how did you all get involved in theater to begin with?
>>Um, I started in high school and it has been my entire life since.
>>That's great.
>>Yeah.
>>And I actually taught at the Montessori school here when I first moved out to Midland.
And and Tim Jebson was a his son was a student of mine.
So I got involved that way.
>>So, so I guess for people that don't know any better, I mean, when you do one of these things at Midland Community Theater, you just don't say, Let's do White Christmas and then just, you know, roll out the season and start acting.
How much preparation time goes into putting on one of these one of these productions?
>>A lot.
>>Well, that's great.
That's fantastic.
Listen, I can't thank you enough and everyone watching out at home, make sure you go and get your tickets to go and see White Christmas as performed at the Midland Community Theater.
>>Sounds like they're calling for the tickets right now.
>>Well, listen, speaking of holiday fun, our next song is the embodiment of it.
