Welcome to "BeBop to Hip-Hop - A Musical Journey".
We are so happy to be here making music for you all.
We're gonna play lots of great styles of music, and we want to show you how the music known as jazz continues to influence the music we listen to today.
The first song you heard was an original composition, entitled "The Scamperists" by our piano player, Wally Minko.
(audience applauding) Wally wrote and arranged all of the music that you're going to hear today.
And if you like writing down the musical ideas in your head, you might love becoming a composer like Wally.
His music has played all over the world and yours could be too.
The next song is a funky arrangement of a popular swing tune called "Sweet Georgia Brown".
You'll hear lots of complicated rhythms and solos by the piano and bass.
In jazz music, when a soloist finishes playing their solo, it's cool to clap for them even if the song isn't over.
Just don't clap too long, or you might miss the next cool thing that's about to happen.
- One, two, three, four.
(band clapping) (instrumental music) (audience applauding) - Some of you may have heard of a very popular style of music called the blues.
It's one of the most important styles of music developed here in America, primarily by African-Americans in the South.
It incorporates elements of spirituals, work songs, and call and response.
Often, blues music has lyrics, which express the sorrow and difficulty of the singer.
Many people say that listening to the blues actually makes them feel better when they're sad.
I guess it helps to know that other people have bad days too.
This next song is a blues entitled "Pork Belly Blues", and it's going to feature Russell, Joey, and our guitarist, Tom.
(instrumental music) (audience applauding) As more and more people came to the United States, they brought their cultures with them.
Many came from places with very different kinds of music, and they started to infuse those styles into jazz.
Music from Latin cultures became very popular, intricate rhythms and percussion instruments were added, and lots of interesting music was made.
The next piece is another original tune from Wally Minko called "Funky Songo".
It combines elements of funk with a Cuban style called Songo.
Listen to how the sounds and rhythms change.
You'll also get to hear a solo from our trombonist, Andy.
(instrumental music) (audience applauding) One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century was a trumpet player and singer named Louis or Louis Armstrong.
Louis was a pioneer in the field of jazz, one of the first major recording artists, and one of the most recognized musicians in the world.
His bold trumpet playing, combined with his iconic voice, made him a superstar.
One of his most popular songs is "What a Wonderful World".
We'd like to play this beautiful piece for you now, featuring our bass player, Matt Bissonette, singing the vocals.
(instrumental music) ♪ I see trees of green ♪ ♪ Red roses too ♪ ♪ I see them bloom ♪ ♪ For me and you ♪ ♪ And I think to myself ♪ ♪ What a wonderful world ♪ ♪ I see skies of blue ♪ ♪ And clouds of white ♪ ♪ The bright blessed days ♪ ♪ The dark sacred nights ♪ ♪ And I think to myself ♪ ♪ What a wonderful world ♪ ♪ The colors of the rainbows ♪ ♪ Are so pretty in the sky ♪ ♪ And also on the faces ♪ ♪ Of people walking by ♪ ♪ I see friends shaking hands ♪ ♪ Saying how do you do ♪ ♪ They're really saying ♪ ♪ I love you ♪ ♪ I hear babies cry ♪ ♪ And I watch them grow ♪ ♪ They'll learn so much more ♪ ♪ Than I'll never know ♪ ♪ And I think to myself ♪ ♪ What a wonderful world ♪ (indistinct) ♪ The colors of the rainbow ♪ ♪ Are so pretty in the sky ♪ ♪ And also on the faces ♪ ♪ Of people walking by ♪ ♪ I see friends shaking hands ♪ ♪ Saying how do you do ♪ ♪ They're really saying ♪ ♪ I love you ♪ ♪ I hear babies cry ♪ ♪ I watch them grow ♪ ♪ They'll learn much more ♪ ♪ Than I'll never know ♪ ♪ And I think to myself ♪ ♪ What a wonderful world ♪ ♪ And I think to myself ♪ ♪ What a wonderful world ♪ (instrumental music) (audience applauding) So as music progressed through the 1950s and 60s, rock and roll became the most popular style in America, heavier drum patterns, electric instruments and powerful vocals are some of the elements of this style.
However, musicians still included aspects of jazz in rock music.
Vocalists especially would improvise riffs that used notes from the blues scale and horn players would also improvise.
Studios in Memphis and Detroit would become the major contributors to rock, soul, and the Motown Sound.
For this next piece, we want to bring out a very special artist, singing "In the Midnight Hour".
Please welcome Deena Russo.

- Another style that was popular in the 1950s was called Doo-wop.
Many songs in this style use vocal harmonies and a repetitive piano accompaniment that sounds kind of like this.
Wally.
(instrumental music) Interestingly enough, a more modern artist uses a similar style in her music.
Please help me welcome Emily Baker to the stage to sing a song that I'm sure you're going to recognize.
Be sure to help us out with the claps at the beginning.

People loved to get dressed up and go dancing at the disco club.
Musical instruments called synthesizers allowed musicians to create brand new sounds and experiment with new textures.
Even though disco was created almost 50 years ago, artists use some of the aspects of that style in their music today.
Dua Lipa has two songs on the charts right now that directly mirror disco music, listen for the synthesizer in this next piece, "Levitating".

- Another song by Dua Lipa reflects an influence of disco is "Don't Start Now".
In this song, she sings, "Aren't you the guy who tried to hurt me with the word goodbye.
Though it took some time to survive you, I'm better on the other side."
And with these lyrics, she's giving a clear nod to the disco anthem, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.
Not only are jazz elements being preserved from generation to generation, but artists are always learning from the musicians who came before them.
So welcome Deena Russo back to sing, "Don't Start Now".

(audience applauding) - One of the most fun styles to hear, perform and dance to is funk music.
Funk music is characterized by syncopated and complex rhythms led by the bass and the drums.
Chords are often borrowed from jazz and soul music and funk creates a hypnotic dance like beat.
Our next tune is entitled "The Chicken".
It was composed by saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, and a prominent recording by bass player, Jaco Pastorius, gave the piece a much wider audience.
I know your toes will start tapping on this song, which is going to feature Dan on trumpet, Andy on trombone and Russel on sax.
(audience applauding) (instrumental music) (audience applauding) In 1961, Ben E. King recorded one of the most popular songs of all time, "Stand By Me".
The song falls into the rhythm and blues category of music and includes stirring lyrics, a powerful melody, and an instantly recognizable bass intro.
On this song, you'll hear Tom play a solo on the guitar.
Please help me welcome Deena Russo back to the stage to sing this timeless classic.
